Sod Laying

At Harwoods’ we sell only the best. ‘Our sod contains the most elite Kentucky Bluegrass varieties available. Kentucky Bluegrass has the greatest genetic diversity of the cool season turf grass species. The 3-D sod blend is naturally dark and requires less fertilizer. Its density out competes weeds and requires less chemicals. There is less vertical growth and lower canopy height which equals less mowing.’ We sell a larger roll (2’x’5’=10sqft.) which equals quicker laying time and overall less seams.

Sod can be laid as soon as the frost is out of the ground, (usually the first week of May sod becomes available, weather permitting). You must remove any existing vegetation, level the surface or ground before laying sod. When sod arrives remove any packaging to allow sod to breathe and lay sod immediately. Following these guidelines below can give you that beautiful lawn you’ve dreamed of:

Installation:

  1. Sod should be laid on bare soil. This can be achieved by:
    1. renting a sod-stripper and removing old turf.
    2. mowing very low to the ground and then raking off debris.
    3. Using glyphosate on a sparse lawn, raking only after the green is killed and then laying sod.
    4. It is not usually advisable, but sod can be laid over existing lawn only after a good layer of topsoil(minimum of 4-6 inches) has been applied and compacted well. Usually not a popular method because it changes the grade of your lawn.
  2. All lawn surfaces must be leveled. Rolling will help determine where soil depressions and irregularities are which need to be leveled. Make sure to leave 1 inch below patios, walks, and driveways to accommodate sod thickness
  3. Fertilize with a good quality surf starter fertilizer at the recommended rate. Rake lightly after applying to bare soil surface.
  4. Using a string guide, lay the 1st strip of sod along the string guide to ensure a straight line. Lay sod strips tightly together but do not over- lap edges. When laying the 2cd strip, stagger joints, similar to laying bricks. To form sod to fit curves/ edges a sharp knife must be used. DO NOT OVERLAP SOD STRIPS. ( If the area is large: as soon as a “sprinkler-sized” area is laid, start watering immediately!!) Watering section by section thereafter. Do not leave sod without water on a hot day for more than an hour and on overcast and cooler days more than 2 hours. Watering immediately after laying will increase your sod laying success by 99%!
  5. To eliminate air pockets and ensure contact between sod roots and soil and evening out the edging joints, sod must be rolled.
  6. Keep lawn moist for at least 2-3 weeks following the watering and mowing schedule below.

Watering Tips:

  • to gauge watering, simply place an empty straight edge can or container about 6 feet away from sprinkler and when there is an inch of water in the can, it is time to move the sprinkler to the next section.
  • Reflected heat along buildings dries sod quickly, be sure to water these areas more often.
  • Check wind pattern to be sure desired area, is in fact getting watered.
  • Check to make sure water has penetrated by lifting sod corner and checking the ground underneath.
  • Ideal time to water would be morning or early evening.

Mowing Tips:

  • Lawn generally needs to be mowed 6-7 days after installation.
  • Basic mowing rule is: never remove more than 1/3 of the blade during a single mowing. Set your mower at 2 1/2″.
  • For best appearance and better resistance to disease, keep your mower blades sharp.

Growing Sod in the Shade:

  1. Growing sod in the shade will require less saturation periods periods than sod grown outside of the shade area. There is less sunlight and air movement in shady environment, thus resulting in less water evaporation need for less water. Too much water will result in disease and mildew/mold.
  2. Within 15 minutes of laying sod it should be watered whether in the shade or in the sun.
  3. Before watering check the area to see if it is to wet to walk on (water in noticeable on the surface or it squishes up to the surface when walked on). Do not water until next day or until water doesn’t surface when walked on.
